What is Sadaqah in Islam

Sadaqah is a very important concept in Islam. It is a voluntary act of charity that holds a special place in Islam, encouraging believers to support those in need with sincerity and compassion. The word Sadaqah comes from ‘sidq’ in Arabic, which means sincerity, reflecting the genuine faith and kindness behind every act of giving. By making sadaqah donations, individuals help create a brighter future for vulnerable families and communities, embodying the Islamic values of faith, kindness, and social responsibility. Giving Sadaqah today is a powerful way to demonstrate your commitment to making a lasting difference in the world.

In the Qur'an, giving Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah is explained with a beautiful metaphor:

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain of corn that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies ˹the reward even more˺ to whoever He wills. For Allah is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.” (Qur’an 2:261)

Sadaqah Jariyah is among the three deeds that will accompany you in the grave and it’s rewards will continue to benefit us even after death. Therefore, Sadaqah Jariyah donations are often made in the name of a deceased person so it may continue to benefit them in the Hereafter.

Difference between Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah

Sadaqah: refers to a voluntary charitable practice which people can perform by giving monetary donations or doing good deeds at any time throughout the year. A Sadaqah donation is often a single, one-time donation, sometimes providing immediate relief.

Sadaqah Jariyah: on the other hand, is an ongoing charity which provides a lasting benefit to those in need. It creates continuous change and is more in line with sustainable development. Every time someone benefits from your Sadaqah jariyah, you will receive reward, even in the next life.

Sadaqah Jariyah is not only an act of faith but an act of philanthropy; it is about supporting those less fortunate through continuous charitable contributions (also known as Sadaqah). WHY DO WE DO SADAQAH CONTRIBUTIONS?

The purpose of Sadaqah is to make a difference and help those less fortunate than ourselves. We give Sadaqah with the goal of benefiting the poor. In every aspect of Islam, we are taught to support one another and help our less fortunate brothers and sisters through whatever struggles they are experiencing. Sadaqah Jariyah is an extension of this, encouraging us to spread our generosity and become closer to Allah (SWT) in the process.
